Mother’s Day Reflection | A Whisper to My Younger Self

Life at the shelters

A place of safety, healing, and hope

It is encouraging to see how well the boys and girls in our shelters are doing. They are safe, stable, and gradually rebuilding their lives physically, mentally, and spiritually. Step by step, they are embracing the rehabilitation process and learning to follow the structure and routines that help create a safe environment for everyone.

Our shelters provide both temporary and long-term accommodation for children through separate spaces for boys and girls. Each day includes structured activities that help the children stay engaged and supported. These activities include assigned chores, recreational games, and study sessions designed to refresh and strengthen their academic skills especially for children who have been out of school for a long time.

Many of the children have already returned to school, while others are preparing to begin. Some of the newer arrivals are ready to enroll soon, while a few still need additional time and support before joining a classroom environment.

Adjusting to shelter life can sometimes be challenging, particularly when newly rescued children join those who have already been in the program. Children who have been at the shelter longer may initially feel cautious around new arrivals, while the newcomers may try to assert themselves so they feel recognized and accepted. These reactions are common as children adapt to a new environment. Through patient conversations, guidance, and carefully planned group activities, we help the children work through these challenges together. They are reminded that the shelter is a safe and supportive place where every child belongs.

Over time, these tensions fade. The children begin to trust one another, form friendships, and develop respect for those around them. Watching them grow in confidence and build a sense of belonging is one of the most rewarding parts of life at the shelters. Day by day, the shelters become more than just a place to stay, they become a place where children feel safe, valued, and hopeful about their future.
