Save Sunshine Shelter Kids is dedicated to providing care for former street children through our shelter, which is located approximately 40 kilometers from Kampala. The shelter serves as a safe haven where children can find shelter, nutritious meals, love, education, and essential life skills. Our mission is to reintegrate these children into society, protecting them from the dangerous and addictive behaviors they may have encountered while living on the streets. The Genesis Boy's Restoration Shelter specifically focuses on rehabilitating rescued boys, providing a family home for those without families or resettlement options, where we act as their permanent guardians.

A Structured Environment for Healing: At the shelter, children learn to live according to rules and guidelines that contrast sharply with their previous lives on the streets. They enjoy three meals a day, sleep in safe beds, and have access to washing facilities and a pit latrine. More than just meeting their physical needs, the boys are nurtured by caring individuals, including transformed volunteers—young women from our former girls' rescue center. These former street children serve as inspiring role models for the boys, demonstrating the possibilities of a transformed life. The shelter also has a male supervisor who focuses on the boys' spiritual and emotional health, which we consider paramount.

Focus on Rehabilitation: Our ultimate goal is to prepare these children to become valued, contributing citizens in their communities. We typically allow a child six months to a year for improvement during the transitional process before enrolling them in school. This approach helps them adopt behaviors that society deems appropriate. By creating a structured environment, we can ensure that the boys understand the expectations placed on them and how to navigate their new reality.

Long-Term Shelter Placement: Following the initial transitional stage, children stay at our shelter for several months or years. This rehabilitation shelter provides a loving and secure environment where children can adjust to life away from the streets. Our focus is on helping them settle down and fostering a sense of belonging before they eventually return to their families. We aim to provide them with a stable foundation from which they can grow and thrive.

Holistic Support Services: Throughout the rehabilitation process, children receive regular counseling, continuous check-ups tailored to their individual needs, emotional support, proper nutrition, and bedding. Each child's journey is unique, and we recognize the importance of addressing their specific challenges. By offering holistic support services, we aim to foster their emotional and physical well-being while helping them develop the skills necessary to reintegrate into society successfully.

Education as a Key Component: In addition to our support services, children join our learning center, where they receive education and life skills training. We focus on educating them while continuing to learn their stories and working on reconnecting them with their families. Education plays a vital role in empowering these children, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to create a better future for themselves. By investing in their education, we strive to break the cycle of poverty and provide them with the opportunities they need to succeed in life.
