Giving Children a Platform to Speak, Write, and Grow

The program aims to provide essential support to children in rural, remote areas, improving their quality of life and easing the challenges they face. Initially, our focus was on addressing the high number of children suffering from tuberculosis, which prompted us to launch a campaign offering free testing and immediate treatment for both mothers and their children. Many of these families were unaware of the disease, and the fear of stigma kept them in silence, suffering without seeking help. Our initiative aimed to break this silence, offering both medical care and emotional support to those affected.

Ugandan women, especially those in rural areas, have a profound connection with their children and are often the primary breadwinners for large, extended families. This responsibility can be overwhelming, leaving them struggling to meet their children's basic needs. Many mothers work in dangerous, exploitative conditions, putting themselves and their children at great risk. Despite their best efforts, they often lack the resources to care for their families adequately, which deepens the cycle of poverty and hardship.

We launched this program during the COVID-19 crisis when many families were displaced and facing severe housing insecurity, particularly in urban areas. Partnering with local community leaders, we initiated a resettlement program aimed at reconnecting families with their roots and offering a safe place for them to rebuild their lives. For those women who had no place to stay, we provided refuge on our far project land, where they could start fresh and give their children the opportunity to attend school. Though the challenges were immense, we worked tirelessly to make this a reality, ensuring that these mothers and children had a chance to create new, stable lives.

Many of the children we work with come from diverse faiths and backgrounds, and we ensure that each child feels included and respected, aligning with our core principles and goals. Recognizing the varied family settings they come from, we design programs that foster unity, inclusivity, and mutual respect, promoting growth and development for all.

Games

Many children miss essential play and social interactions due to demanding family schedules, like farming and animal rearing. To address this, we created programs that engage and nurture children holistically. We use games as a tool for learning and social development, promoting teamwork, problem-solving, and experimentation. These activities allow children to practice and expand their skills in a supportive, competitive environment.

We offer various games, including football, tie threads, running, dancing, and hair competitions, all uniting the children. These activities help build confidence, allowing children to be who they want and wish to be.

Why

We believe all children have a right to live up to their full potential as individuals. We do the very best to ensure that we are apart to wake their dreams and support them the best way we can. Because of poverty and patriarchic beliefs, parents and society don’t believe in investing in a certain sex (girls) because of their beliefs. As we work with their parents we want to still see an impact in the lives of their children so that every development happens it is on both side of the children and their parents in a large sense. This helps to improve and build a strong bond among them.

Our program is designed for every child living in that remote area where the far project is and we ensure to do our best by involving their parents and the children at large. The program helps bridge the gap of those children who are able to attend school and those who don't as we ensure that they all have the basic needs more especially scholastic materials to keep them all in school.

About Let them talk, Write and Learn

This project includes several programs that we run outside the city, one of which is dedicated to supporting the children of the women we serve. The program, titled "Let Them Read, Let Them Write, and Learn," focuses on meeting the educational and developmental needs of children encountered through our women’s initiatives. We want these children to know that there is a dedicated program in place that is designed to nurture and support them, just as much as it supports their mothers.

Initially, our focus was on resettling women back into communities, where they could rebuild their lives and gain a fresh start. At the time, we had not yet considered the specific needs of their children, as our main priority was to help women recover from the hardships brought on by the COVID-19 crisis. Many women faced immense challenges during the pandemic, and the solution we implemented focused on providing them with the opportunity to re-establish themselves. However, as we began to observe the impact on the children and the responsibilities they carried, we realized that we needed to create a space for them as well, particularly as their mothers worked in the gardens and contributed to their families’ livelihood.

It is truly heartwarming to see mothers working hard to improve their lives through agriculture and animal rearing. These efforts bring about significant changes, not only in their own lives but in the lives of their children. Knowing that their children are happy, healthy, and thriving allows these mothers to focus on their work with peace of mind, secure in the knowledge that their families are safe and together. This sense of stability empowers them to continue pushing forward, fostering a better future for themselves and their children.
At the core of our mission is the belief that family should remain united. We are committed to supporting the relationship between mothers and their children, particularly for those who have grown up without father figures. We strive to create an environment where both mothers and children can thrive together, strengthening family bonds and giving them the tools they need to face life's challenges as a team. This approach helps to foster mutual respect, understanding, and security within the family unit.
The progress we have witnessed in the children is nothing short of inspiring. They are not only learning to read and write, but they are also developing a deeper understanding of how they want to learn and grow. By involving parents in every step of the process, we ensure that both parents and children are supported in overcoming obstacles together. The children’s eagerness to learn and their growing sense of self-awareness are a testament to the power of family unity and the positive impact of our programs.

How we operate and work

Our weekend programs run every Saturday and Sunday at the Far Project, with a well-structured outline designed for both children and women. Each weekend, we begin with games, followed by breakfast, and then proceed with activities that offer both educational and recreational value. Our goal is to ensure that every session introduces something new to engage the children while fostering their growth and learning.
A key component of our program is a dance initiative, which all children are encouraged to participate in. We view this as a sustainable activity that could eventually generate funds to support the children’s needs. In total, we run 12 distinct programs, each carefully organized to enhance the children's educational and developmental abilities while also nurturing their talents.

We’ve seen the impact of giving a little of ourselves to work with women and empower families. The significance of this effort is truly transformative.

Our Aim

We aim to give mothers and children the opportunity to achieve their dreams and ensure they can provide for their children's well-being through the programs we run.

We aim to see lives changed and hear testimonies of how far God has brought them. We’ve witnessed mothers persevere through countless challenges, never giving up on their children. Our goal is to see a generation of children transformed for the better. We are committed to putting in the work to make this happen.
